When Hail Leaves Its Mark

NWS Springfield measured hail up to 4.75 inches near Bois d'Arc in west Greene County, Missouri, on April 28, 2026, which the governor's office called the largest on record in Springfield or Greene County. The old county mark was 3.00 inches, on June 23, 1980. Reports reached 2.75 inches in Springfield, 3.25 in Republic, 4.00 in Willard, 2.50 in Battlefield, 1.75 in Nixa and 1.00 in Ozark.

NWS listed roofing, siding, gutters and windows among the damage. Hail harm is often hard to see from the driveway: bruised spots and lost granules can look like nothing until the next heavy rain. A roof that looks fine may well be fine, and a free inspection is a calm way to know.

Wind counts too. On April 29, 2025, NWS recorded a 90 mph gust at Springfield-Branson National Airport and 87 mph at Nixa, and more than 50,000 Springfield customers lost power.

Typical Reasons to Request Storm Damage Roof Replacement

  • Dents on vents, flashing or gutters. Dings on metal are a simple clue that hail hit hard enough to mark shingles too.
  • Grit washing out of downspouts. Piles of dark granules can mean shingles lost part of their surface.
  • Shingles creased, flapping or gone. Wind that breaks the seal strips leaves underlayment open to rain.
  • A new ceiling stain after a storm. Water that shows up days later often traces to a cracked shingle or bent flashing.

Cost Factors for Storm Damage Roof Replacement

Storm work is priced like any re-roof: size, pitch, material, layers and decking. Your policy and your insurer's decision set what a claim pays; the roofer's estimate sets what the work costs. Prices can run higher while roofers are busy after a big hailstorm.

The Usual Sequence

  1. Stay off the roof. Take photos from the ground and note the storm date.
  2. Request a free inspection, and we pass it to one independent local roofer.
  3. The roofer photographs and measures the damage and writes an estimate.
  4. You decide whether to file a claim and talk with your insurer directly.
  5. On an insurance-paid job, check that the contract carries Missouri's cancellation notice and form.

What Sets This Apart

Nothing here runs on a clock. You choose when to ask, whom to hire and whether to file at all. We pass your request to one roofer and step back: no work, no prices, no talks with your insurer. Before hiring, see the roofer's City of Springfield business license and a certificate of liability coverage.

From Claim to Approved Scope

The claim is between you and your insurance company. Missouri law (RSMo 407.725.6) bars a roofer from representing you or negotiating the claim, or advertising that it will. A roofer's part is documenting damage and writing an estimate. Only a public adjuster holding a Missouri license may argue a claim for you (RSMo 325.015).

RSMo 407.725.2 keeps roofers from offering to cover or refund your deductible in ads or in person, and from handing you a gift, credit or referral fee connected to the job. Treat such an offer as a warning sign. This site offers nothing of value either.

Should your insurer send written word that some or all of the loss falls outside your coverage, RSMo 407.725.3 lets you cancel an insurance-paid roofing contract up to midnight of the fifth business day after that notice reaches you. The contract must explain this and include a cancellation form, and your money comes back within ten days, minus the reasonable value of emergency work you agreed to in writing.

Signed at home? Federal rules usually allow until midnight of the third business day to cancel a sale over $25 made there, and Missouri adds that right for financed sales. In 2025 the Missouri Attorney General won a roofing-fraud judgment in Greene County. Concerns go to the AG's Consumer Protection Hotline, 800-392-8222; insurance questions to the Department of Commerce and Insurance, (800) 726-7390.

Questions Worth Asking

Did hail that size fall on my street?

Probably not, since sizes varied a lot along the storm's path. The 4.75-inch stone was measured near Bois d'Arc, and Springfield reports topped out at 2.75 inches. Smaller hail can still crack older shingles, so a close look is the only way to know.

Will FEMA pay for my roof?

Greene County was in federal disaster declarations after the April 2025 and April 2026 storms, but both covered public assistance, meaning repairs to government property. Neither pays for homeowners' roofs, so your own policy is the place to look.

Is there a deadline for reporting hail damage?

Each policy sets its own reporting rules. Read yours or call your insurer and ask. The inspection itself has no time limit.

Should the new roof use impact-resistant shingles?

It's an option, not a rule. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are built to take hail better, and many insurers discount premiums for them; ask yours before deciding.

Also Worth a Look

For every state protection in one place, see Missouri roofing rules. If the damage looks limited, roof repair may cover it.
